Armstrong became the first person to step onto the lunar surface six hours later on July 21 at 02:56:15 UTC; Aldrin joined him about 20 minutes later. He described the event as <strong><em>\u201cone small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.\u201d<\/em><\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/apollospaceprogram.com\/index.php\/the-apollo-missions\/the-apollo-11-mission\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"169\">Apollo 11<\/a> effectively ended the Space Race and fulfilled a national goal proposed in 1961 by President John F.
